Huntington Public Library Adult Reading Challenge

The fantasy world here is so interesting and I found the characters well written. I liked the magical system, though I wasn't quite as taken with the execution of the monster inside Elspeth's head. I understood what the author was doing, but I found him more creepy in a predator way than scary in a monster way, if that makes sense. Still, I thought the story was very entertaining and I really enjoyed the overarching reading experience!  

  I couldn't put this one down. I listened to the audio on Libby and also read the book, which includes beautiful artwork by the author. This story fits in well with the folk horror subgenre, and is as atmospheric and enchanting as it is creepy and gory. It's 1666, Connecticut. Abitha, a free-spirited Englishwoman arrives at the puritan colony and quickly finds herself at odds with Puritan culture. Eventually rumors begin to spread that she is a witch. Meanwhile, an ancient and powerful pagan spirit awakens, Slewfoot being one of his many names. Abitha and Slewfoot grapple with their roles in this new puritanical world, and once their paths cross they find strength and belonging in their kinship. The witchcraft accusation against Abitha sets her and Slewfoot on a quest for revenge. This is a must read for horror fans!
