The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski

Wow. Is the only word that comes to mind while reading this novel based in Nazi Germany. I have read many mainstream novels such as Diary Of Anne Frank and The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, but, The Painted Bird may top the list of stories and collections I have ever read related to Nazi Germany. The book follows a young boy throughout his life as he is left homeless time and time again and is referred to as a Gypsy with no address or family. The story recounts the many different types of people he meets, many of those who were helping generously to hide the Jews and assist the Gypsies with shelter and food as they tried to evade the Nazi’s. The stories the boy recounts in this novel are so gruesome that I cannot write in this review. I could not believe that such events took place and more that have not been told in the format of a story or published.
