The Widows of Malabar Hill: A Mystery of 1920s Bombay by Sujata Massey

 I enjoyed this first in a fairly new detective series which takes place in 1920s Bombay. I was hooked in by the deft interweaving of the present, with the heroine, Perveen, now working as an attorney with her father, and the past, which describes her first love and first marriage. In fact, I almost found this story more gripping and affecting than the mystery of the Widows of Malabar Hill, although there was plenty of suspense there too. Great summer read and very well done. Just borrowed number 2 in the series "The Satapur Moonstone".

Black Noise by Tricia Rose

  This book was written over 30 years ago. The author was able to do a deep-dive into hip-hop when it was and had "blown up" - 1990s. It's an exploration of hip-hop as cultural expression of the lived experiences, struggles, and creativity of black communities. Tricia Rose explores race and identity, social and economic inequality, resistance and empowerment, and commercialization and authenticity between hip-hop’s roots in community expression and mainstream culture. It's a LOT to say the least. I highly recommend if you're a hip-hop head.
