The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

 Beautifully written. An engrossing retelling of the Russian folktale Snegurochka set in Alaska. The winter is rendered as a character alongside Mabel, her husband, and her snow child. I am not an enormous fan of the ending but that is partially because of my knowledge of Slavic folklore - I suppose that those coming in fresher would not have the annoyed reaction I did to the choices Ivey made. Regardless, this is a nice summer read when you want something snowy!

A key takeaway for me was the importance of balance and priorities when engaging in any passion that could lean toward fanaticism. Overall, this audiobook is well-written and inclusive for everyone — from casual Disney fans to die-hard “Disney Adults.”

Black Noise by Tricia Rose

  This book was written over 30 years ago. The author was able to do a deep-dive into hip-hop when it was and had "blown up" - 1990s. It's an exploration of hip-hop as cultural expression of the lived experiences, struggles, and creativity of black communities. Tricia Rose explores race and identity, social and economic inequality, resistance and empowerment, and commercialization and authenticity between hip-hop’s roots in community expression and mainstream culture. It's a LOT to say the least. I highly recommend if you're a hip-hop head.
