The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski

Wow. Is the only word that comes to mind while reading this novel based in Nazi Germany. I have read many mainstream novels such as Diary Of Anne Frank and The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, but, The Painted Bird may top the list of stories and collections I have ever read related to Nazi Germany. The book follows a young boy throughout his life as he is left homeless time and time again and is referred to as a Gypsy with no address or family. The story recounts the many different types of people he meets, many of those who were helping generously to hide the Jews and assist the Gypsies with shelter and food as they tried to evade the Nazi’s. The stories the boy recounts in this novel are so gruesome that I cannot write in this review. I could not believe that such events took place and more that have not been told in the format of a story or published. It makes your heart bleed with emotions for the people that may have had to go through this in history. It’s was not one, not two. Not even three, but many of the characters introduced along the way of the boys travels were met with such horrifying consequences while only trying to share their kind hearts to the helpless people and children. The Painted Bird depicts a story of this young boy who has to lose his innocence at such a young age, learns of all the evils of the world in the most harsh ways that your heart will hurt throughout the end of the novel. I would recommend this to anyone with a soul to read. It was a very emotional read.

Black Noise by Tricia Rose

  This book was written over 30 years ago. The author was able to do a deep-dive into hip-hop when it was and had "blown up" - 1990s. It's an exploration of hip-hop as cultural expression of the lived experiences, struggles, and creativity of black communities. Tricia Rose explores race and identity, social and economic inequality, resistance and empowerment, and commercialization and authenticity between hip-hop’s roots in community expression and mainstream culture. It's a LOT to say the least. I highly recommend if you're a hip-hop head.
